The
Praetorians were the only Roman soldiers allowed to be within the city walls.
They were the Imperial guards, a sort of body guards, except that quite often
they were directly involved in the murder and disposal of whichever Emperor they
were supposed to be guarding.
The dark legacy of power he handed to the military Praetorian guards was Caligula's merit.
They were camped in a castle on the eastern side of Rome called Castro Pretorio. A portion of the Castrum (castle) forms part of the Aurelian walls which are still standing around the city.
